In the interest of maintaining the peace, I didnât challenge Jemma about her version of the chat sheâd had with Dennis the Menace. I guess if this happened the first time I would have, but things were different now. I needed to understand what was happening so I could get to the bottom of the mystery and ensure she wasnât murdered. After that, well, I just didnât know. For sure, she needed to change if I was going to fall back in love with her.
On Tuesday morning I dropped Jemma off at the station, then headed off to work. Apart from my list, which wasnât very scientific, all I had achieved so far was struggling to like my wife again and realising she had a propensity to get peopleâs backs up. My concern regarding what games my wife was playing was further enhanced when Alison buzzed through to say I had a visitor, asking if I was free.
Clare Heaton and I had always got on well. Although she was a bit of a posh horsey type, sheâd instantly liked me that day I performed my bionic man impression in the Bell Pub. She was the one who had pushed Jemma to go on a second date, saying that I was a real catch and Jemma should grab me â that was nice, I guess.
Alison hadnât previously met Clare and, judging by the catty stares on offer as she ushered her through to my office, Alison evidently didnât like her.
With her long strawberry-blonde hair, shapely legs up to and beyond her armpits, plus more than the required BSH, Clare Heaton is a total stunner. Her vivacious hourglass figure did more than turn heads. Clare Heatonâs looks stopped traffic.
Paul was in reception when Clare arrived and, after undressing her out of her pencil skirt suit with his eyes, his tongue scraped along the floor as he followed both ladies to my office. Even though sheâd rebuffed his advances in the pub that Saturday night in â76, Paul still thought heâd have another go. I quickly shut the office door on him, narrowly avoiding wedging his wagging tongue in the doorjamb.
Clareâs usual radiance wasnât on show today, and appeared sullen as if she carried the world on her shoulders.
âThis is a nice surprise, Clare. Can I get you a coffee or tea?â
âNo, Frankie, Iâm fine, thanks.â After carefully smoothing the back of her skirt, Clare perched on the chair opposite. We sat in silence for a brief moment as she stared past me out of the window.
âYou okay?â Although I liked Clare, visiting me at work was odd.
âYour reception girl needs to wear a bra. Sheâll take someoneâs eye out.â
âDonât go there. I was going to have a word, but, I dunno, itâs a bit of a delicate conversation to have.â
âGet the lech to tell her,â suggested Clare, as she nodded to the door, where I suspected Paul was trying to retrieve his tongue.
âYouâre joking, arenât you? Heâd tell Alison sheâs overdressed and would suggest it would be better if she came in with a little less on!â
âHa, yes, he would.
